Avoiding the Summer Slumber

As the days get warmer, it's the perfect time to refocus on your Pilates routine and find creative ways to stay active. I'll share some of my tips on  maintaining your Pilates practice during the summer months and how to incorporate more movement into your daily routine to meet the physical activity guidelines. Let's make this summer your healthiest and most active yet!

Staying on Track with Your Pilates Routine

Summer brings a lot of distractions - vacations, social events and the irresistible urge to relax on the beach on sit on a patio. However, it's essential to keep up with your Pilates practice to maintain your progress and continue reaping the benefits.

Here are some tips to help you stay on track:

Create a Summer Schedule - Plan your Pilates sessions just as you would schedule any important appointment. Whether you prefer morning or evening workouts, consistency is key. Mark your calendar and stick to your routine.

Take it Outdoors - Take advantage of the beautiful weather by moving your Pilates mat outside. Find a shady spot in your garden or a quiet corner in the park to perform your exercises. The fresh air and natural surroundings can add a refreshing twist to your routine. We'll have outdoor classes on the Pilates Porch all season long PLUS many of our classes will be offered via Zoom, so you can join us where ever you may be this summer.

Try a New Group Class - Stay motivated and avoid plateaus by joining a group class you haven't taken yet. Working out in a group setting can boost your motivation and accountability. Check out our updated summer class schedule (see above) and sign up for a class that fits your routine.

Stay Hydrated - Summer heat can make you feel more fatigued. Ensure you’re drinking plenty of water before, during and after your Pilates sessions to stay hydrated and energized.

Modify When Needed - Listen to your body and modify exercises as needed. If the heat is too intense, opt for a gentler routine or practice indoors. Our studio has central air conditioning PLUS in approximately 2-3 weeks the Pilates Porch will be covered with a UV protective sail. Remember, the goal is to stay consistent, not to push yourself too hard.

Adding More Movement to Your Day

Incorporating more movement into your daily routine can help you meet the physical activity guidelines, which recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week and muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week.

Here are some fun and simple ways to add more movement to your day:

Take Short Walks: Instead of sitting during breaks, take short walks around the neighborhood or workplace. Aim for a brisk 10-minute walk three times a day to reach the recommended 30 minutes.

Use Active Transportation: If possible, walk or bike to your destinations. This not only adds physical activity but also helps reduce your carbon footprint.

Try New Activities: Summer is a great time to explore new physical activities. Try swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding or beach volleyball. These activities are not only fun but also excellent for building strength and endurance.

Stretch Regularly: Incorporate stretching into your daily routine. Stretching keeps your muscles flexible and can be done anytime, whether you’re watching TV or taking a break from work.

Set Movement Reminders: Use your phone or a timer to set reminders to stand up and move every hour. Simple activities like stretching, walking, or even doing a few Pilates exercises can make a big difference.
